Holy Crap! Unfreakingbelievable! Republican Congressman Allen West is Nucking Futs

http://www.freewoodpost.com/2012/02/25/west-im-black-by-birth-not-by-choice/

In a week of circus like activity for the GOP, Republican Congressman Allen West may have taken the award for the most over the top statement ever given. In a recent sit down with the Florida Representative, CNN anchor John King asked Mr. West how he felt about being a black Congressman during Black History Month.
>
> In light of this month being Black History Month, I feel no way involved with this negro celebration of half accomplishments and borderline Communist agendas. View the list of these “fearless” leaders of black America. Black inhabitants of America knew their place at the table, and knew they could not eat off the same plate of the more than welcoming white men and women of the time. These men, I use that term lightly, like Malcolm X pushed themselves into the homes of innocent white Americans. This action riled up the negro, and scared the living hell out of people. I am no way apart of this community of transported Africans, I myself am an American. I’m a good ol’ boy from the great state of Florida, and a citizen of this great nation. I know God recognizes me as my true self, a proud, strong white man given dark pigmentation. God had to give the blacks at least one intelligent person, so he chose to give me dark skin. I curse my birth as a black man every day. I’m black by birth, not by choice. It will all be sorted out when my name is called, and I step in front of the great white Jesus himself.

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Scientists Closer to Identifying Genetic Risk Factors in Autoimmune Disease

Scientists Closer to Identifying Genetic Risk Factors in Autoimmune Disease

Alliance For Lupus Research Commits $500,000 To Glean Genetic Basis For Lupus In African Americans And Other Ethnicities

Powerful ImmunoChip Technology Expands Range of Testing

NEW YORK, March 9, 2011/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) - the world's largest private funder of lupus research - today announced funding of an important new study to identify lupus susceptibility genes in multiple ethnicities including African Americans, who are three times more likely than Caucasians to have the disease. The study, part of the SLE Genetics Consortium (SLEGEN), is among the few to concentrate so heavily on the genetic variants in non-Caucasian populations and will employ a powerful genotyping platform known as the ImmunoChip, allowing for a significantly broader evaluation of genetic variations in individuals while utilizing the most current and comprehensive information about human DNA.

The ALR is the only organization to recommend researchers include lupus information on the chip, which was previously designed for other autoimmune diseases, and to stipulate the study be expanded to include non-Caucasian ethnicities.

"We are proud to advocate for and fund such an important study geared toward understanding the genetic basis of lupus in diverse populations," said Ken Farber, executive director, Alliance for Lupus Research. "The ALR is the only organization to support a study like this. We believe that such cutting-edge research is moving us one step closer to a cure for this debilitating disease."

The ImmunoChip will allow researchers to test a quarter of a million genetic markers in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Because the ImmunoChip is being employed by researchers studying other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, scientists will have the opportunity to evaluate the common shared genetic risk factors across many autoimmune disorders.

About SLEGEN

The three-year International SLE Genetics (SLEGEN) Consortium research project was founded and supported with $2.25 million in funding from the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR). Published in the January 20, 2008, issue of Nature Genetics, the results underscore the role of genetic variants in predisposing an individual to developing lupus. Researchers studied the DNA of more than 6,700 women, including individuals with lupus, their family members and control subjects. After sifting through a massive database and scanning the entire genome for more than 317,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), scientists discovered four genes with robust evidence of genetic linkage to lupus and nine additional genes with promising evidence of linkage to the disease.

About Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect the joints and almost every major organ in the body, including the heart, kidneys, skin, lungs, and brain. As many as 1.4 million people in the United States have lupus which affects mostly women during childbearing years, though men and children can have the disease. Lupus is three times more common in African-American women than in Caucasian women and is also more prevalent in women of Latino, Asian, and Native American descent.

About the ALR

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is a national voluntary health organization dedicated to finding better treatments and ultimately preventing and curing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus), a debilitating autoimmune disease. The organization is based in New York City and chaired by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a member of the founding family of Johnson & Johnson. Since its founding in 1999, the ALR has given more money to lupus research than any non-governmental agency in the world. The board of directors funds all administrative and fundraising costs, allowing one hundred percent of all donations from the public, and the proceeds of our signature grassroots fundraising program, Walk with Us to Cure Lupus, go directly to support research programs. More information can be found at www.lupusresearch.org.

SOURCE Alliance for Lupus Research

Alliance for Lupus Research

Web Site: http://www.lupusresearch.org

-------
Profile: African-American News

Posted via email from rah's posterous

NAACP and Corporate America Endorse Misogyny and the "N" word, says Enough Is Enough Campaign

WASHINGTON,March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At tonight's 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards, the nation's oldest civil rights organization will team up with some of America's largest corporations to celebrate hip-hop and R&B artists who proudly use the "N" word, refer to women as "bitches" and "whores," glorify violence, misogyny, and drug use. FedEx, Wells Fargo, Chrysler, Southwest Airlines, McDonalds, Walgreens, Bank of America, and AT&T are among a long list of corporations sponsoring this year's NAACP Image Awards. In a gesture that has shocked decency advocates, the awards show has nominated artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Diddy Dirty Money, and B.O.B. whose sexually explicit and offensive lyrics are clearly incompatible with the NAACP's mission and the diversity goals of the program's corporate sponsors.

According to Rev. Delman Coates, Organizer of the Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment and Senior Pastor of the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD, "It is a complete outrage that the NAACP and some of this country's largest corporations would endorse artists that degrade women, use the "N" word, and promote values that are antithetical to the goals and aspirations of most Americans. Lyrical content, not commercial success should be the standard by which such nominations and sponsorships are given. At a time when we have witnessed social and political progress in America, it is disheartening to see established civil rights organizations and leading American corporations promote some of the most stereotypical and offensive images and messages in the popular culture."

Concerns about hip-hop lyrics are not new. For over 20 years, activists and organizations have challenged derogatory and sexually explicit lyrics. That fact adds to the bewilderment felt by critics who wonder why NAACP leadership and corporate executives continue to promote artists who glorify drinking and drug use, sexually objectify women, and use derogatory terms that Blacks and women find highly offensive. Says Coates, "A few years ago, Don Imus lost his job for using language that pales in comparison to the messages conveyed by some of these artists. The messages of the Image Award nominees are not any more acceptable because they are said by Black artists and celebrated by the NAACP. These are not images that any respectable civil rights organization or responsible American corporation should endorse. Tonight's program will have long term implications for the reputation of the NAACP and the corporate brands of the program's sponsors."

The NAACP Image Awards, considered by the NAACP to be a "multi-cultural awards show celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts...as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors," airs tonight March 4, 2011 on Fox. The Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment is calling on the NAACP to (1) publicly explain how the lyrical content of the nominated artists is consistent with its mission and that of the Image Awards show, (2) make systemic changes to the Image Awards nomination process, and (3) encourage corporate sponsors to be more accountable for the content of the programs they sponsor.

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Drunks are brilliant [Joke]

I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected:
A half-gallon of 2% milk
A carton of eggs
A quart of orange juice
A head of lettuce
A 2 lb. can of coffee
A 1 lb. package of bacon

As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk
standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier.
While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated,
'You must be single.'

I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the
derelict's intuition, since I indeed had never found Mr. Right.

I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual
about my selections that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital
status..

Curiosity getting the better of me, I said, 'Yes you are correct. But how
on earth did you know that?'

The drunk replied, 'Cause you're ugly.'

Posted via email from rah's posterous

The NAACP 'Wrong' Image Awards

WASHINGTON,March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 20-year campaign to challenge offensive lyrics and derogatory images in urban contemporary music will encounter a monumental setback this Friday, March 4, 2011 during the NAACP's 42nd Annual Image Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and airing on Fox. The nation's oldest civil rights organization has nominated several hip hop artists (Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Diddy Dirty Money, Kanye West, and B.O.B.) whose adult and sexually explicit lyrics have shocked advocates fighting for decency in the music industry. The Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment is among several organizations that has taken a hard stance against the glorification of lyrical content that promotes violence, demeans and sexually objectives women, promotes drug use and criminal activity, and refers to today's youth as pimps and gangster. Even more troubling to observers is the fact that the NAACP ceremonially buried the "N" word in July 2007, and yet, many of its Image Award nominees unashamedly use the "N" word and other derogatory and offensive language in their music.

According to Rev. Delman Coates, Organizer of the Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment, and Senior Pastor of the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD., this year's Image Award nominations are a travesty and reflect a lack of leadership on such an important cultural issue. According to Rev. Coates, "We were led to believe that the NAACP's 2007 funeral for the 'N' word was intended to represent a broader stance against the glorification of offensive themes and lyrics in today's popular music, themes that are contrary to the principles and values of the civil rights movement. It is unconscionable that the NAACP would sully its brand, squander its legacy, and take such a stand contrary to the aspirations and dreams of the mainstream of the African-American community."

According to the NAACP, the Image Awards is a "multi-cultural awards show celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts...as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors." Despite the commercial success of the nominees in the recording category, it is inconceivable how the NAACP substantiates and justifies such nominations in light of its history, mission, and youth programs. Says Rev. Coates, "There are serious issues here with these nominations in light of the stated mission of this program. These nominations represent a lack of vision and a flawed process that must be evaluated and changed. This Friday's awards show also taints the brands of all of the corporate sponsors associated with this program. While artists are free to produce their own art, it is not acceptable for public corporations and established civil right organizations to sanction the kinds of lyrics promoted by some of these artists. The NAACP should be ashamed for not using this platform to profile the numerous positive hip hop/R&B artists that are out there today. These are the wrong images for a civil rights organization to nominate and endorse."

The Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment is (1) calling for the NAACP to publicly explain how the lyrical content of the nominated artists is consistent with its mission and that of the Image Awards show, (2) calling for corporate sponsors of the NAACP Image Awards (FedEX, Well Fargo, Walgreens, Chrysler, UAW, Bank of America, Southwest Airlines, Ford Motor Company, AT&T, etc.) to explain why they are sponsoring a program that endorses such lyrical content, (3) calling on all citizens to contact the NAACP and awards show sponsors to express their outrage about these nominations, and (4) calling on other civil rights organizations and leaders to take a public stance against the NAACP's endorsement of such lyrical content.

Web Site: http://www.EnoughisEnoughCampaign.com

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Google Goes In On Bing After Microsoft Denies Copying Search Results | Black Web 2.0

Based on this case, Google created 100 “synthetic queries” and monitored them closely. These are things a person would probably never search for. Mostly, stuff like [hiybbprqag]. For these queries, they inserted pretty much random sites as the top result. Within a couple of weeks of starting this experiment, Google’s fake results started appearing in Bing.

via blackweb20.com

I once heard a story about cheating on a test. The teacher asked to speak with two students about a recent test. It seemed one of them was cheating. Because of past tests, the teacher already knew who the culprit was. You see, one student had a bad habit of writing "I Don't Know" for answers they couldn't figure out.

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Outrage After Mother Sentenced to Prison for Sending Her Children to Better Public School

Outrage After Mother Sentenced to Prison for Sending Her Children to Better Public School

Black Alliance for Educational Options Leaders Issue Call for More School Choice in Ohio

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The chairman of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, Kevin P. Chavous, today joined with BAEO's president, Kenneth Campbell, in denouncing the conviction of Akron mother Kelley Williams-Bolar. Ms. Williams-Bolar was convicted and sentenced to prison for sending her children to a better public school. Mr. Chavous and Mr. Campbell today issued the following statement:

"We are outraged at the circumstances that led to the prosecution and conviction of Kelley Williams-Bolar. As reported in the Akron Beacon Journal, Williams-Bolar was found guilty and sentenced severely for an act that defied the strict letter of the law but does not defy reason. She sent her daughters to schools outside her district of residence.

Ohio law says that if you live in Akron, you must send your children to your neighborhood school, even if it is a failing school and regardless of whether you feel your child would get a better education and stand a better chance of success elsewhere. The law says you're stuck--unless you're wealthy enough to opt out or fortunate enough to get into a high-performing charter school or to get selected for one of only 14,000 EdChoice scholarships available state-wide.

Williams-Bolar is not wealthy, so paying private school tuition for her two children was not an option, nor could she afford to move out of public housing and into a district with better schools. To be fair, Ohio has done more than most states in terms of providing options for parents whose children need better educational opportunities. But clearly, more could and should be done. In far too many states, however, these parents have no choice at all. It is high time we change the laws that force low-income and working-class families to choose between playing by the rules and doing what's best for their children.

Earlier this month, our nation honored the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., and this week, BAEO joins families, educators, and advocacy groups coast to coast in celebrating National School Choice Week. The Williams-Bolar case is a sober reminder that Dr. King's dream remains unrealized, and parental choice is the most pressing civil rights issue of our time. Every child deserves access to a quality education, and as Dr. King said, we must act with the fierce urgency of now.

Today, Kelley Williams-Bolar is serving a jail sentence for pursuing a better educational option for her daughters. Meanwhile, her children must--like thousands of other low-income students of color--endure a sentence of their own: consignment to unsafe, underperforming schools in close proximity to their homes, year after year. There is no justice here."

For more information on BAEO visit www.baeo.org.

SOURCE Black Alliance for Educational Options

Black Alliance for Educational Options

CONTACT: Andrew Campanella, +1-202-276-1303, andrew@ccgstrategies.com

Web Site: http://www.baeo.org

-------
Profile: African-American News

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Kelley Williams Bolar Update: Had She Been White and/or Wealthy, She Wouldn't Be In Jail

Black family wealth being significantly lower than that of white families (due to slavery and Jim Crow) reminds us that had Ms. Williams-Bolar been a wealthy woman from the suburbs, it is highly unlikely that she would have been used as an example by the court. I am compelled to believe that the prosecutor would have used his discretion to keep this incident from permanently staining her record and would not have forced this law-abiding mother to endure the dehumanization of walking around in a dirty jailhouse jump suit for nearly two weeks.
Secondly, most white Americans don't have to break the law in order to get their children access to a good education. But millions of Americans, disproportionately those of color, are being forced to jump the legal fence to sneak their kids into quality academic programs. Having a decent, safe venue of education should be a fundamental American right, not something we have to break the law in order to receive. While it might have been illegal for Ms. Williams-Bolar to fight for her kids to get into a good school, we must remember that it was also once illegal for slaves to learn how to read. My point is that legality is not always the same as morality, so the argument that she's wrong because she broke the law is simply invalid.

via bvonmoney.com

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Dr. Boyce Watkins Spotlight: Helping Fathers Secure Rights to See Their Children - BV on Money

What surprised the heck out of me was that while the courts were always quick to threaten me with jail time if I'd chosen not to pay my child support, they showed almost no concern regarding whether or not I had the right to see my daughter. There was also no accountability regarding where my money was going and if those funds were being used to manage the needs of my child. I found myself increasingly frustrated by both my experience and also the broader perception of all black male non-custodial parents as dead beat dads. The truth is that while there are far too many dead beats, there are also fathers who've been victimized by parental alienation or an overzealous mother who feels that she can dictate every dimension of the father/child relationship. The mere implication that black males love their children any less than other people is a clear and stereotypical insult to our humanity.

via bvonmoney.com

Posted via email from rah's posterous

NCAAOM Denounces Failure of Federal Communications Commission to Issue the Triennial Report to Congr

NCAAOM Denounces Failure of Federal Communications Commission to Issue the Triennial Report to Congress Prior to Considering the
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- TheNational Coalition of African American Owned Media(NCAAOM) denounces the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") as incompetent and unfair because of their failure to file the Triennial Report Section 257 to Congress prior to vetting Comcast Corporation's ("Comcast") proposed merger with NBC Universal ("NBCU"). Specifically, Section 257 of the Communications Act, requires the FCC to submit the Triennial Reports every three years "identifying and eliminating...market entry barriers for entrepreneurs and other small businesses...." The FCC submitted the required reports for 1997, 2000, 2003, and (several months late) 2006, but the FCC has not yet submitted its 2009 report.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110115/LA30782LOGO)

"FCC Chairman Genachowski's shameful disregard to fulfill the statutory mandate of the Communications Act is utterly appalling and frustrating on many fronts, especially in light of Chairman Genachowski's recent submission of the Comcast-NBCU merger order to the FCC Commissioners prior to filing the overdue Triennial Report to Congress," said Stanley E. Washington, President and CEO, NCAAOM. "The FCC had sufficient time to produce the report and their flagrant disregard of their critical obligations to the law is no longer tolerable. Furthermore, it is unfortunate that the current FCC failed to address the last report to advance minority ownership and eliminate barriers for entry but consequently marginalized minorities voices. President Obama and his administration promised us change. Now is the time for the FCC to deliver on change and stipulate strict merger conditions to ensure African American wholly-owned media companies have no barriers to entry in order to access cable television bandwidth immediately on Comcast Cable's platforms. Moreover, the Memos of Understanding with various minority groups are intentionally biased, flawed and disingenuous. A minimum of 50 channels must be set aside for wholly-owned African American media companies.

Shame on Julius Genachowski. He knows that the Comcast-NBCU merger should not be approved until the mandated 2009 Triennial Report, which is long overdue, has been filed, and the new Congress has sufficient time to review. Given the biased Memos of Understanding with the civil rights organizations that have accepted donations from Comcast-NBCU which creates a huge conflict of interest, and the FCC's failure to file the mandated Triennial Report, this merger, if approved, will be successfully challenged. Obama and his administration cannot turn their backs on the African American community and the voices of future generations. They have the opportunity to embrace all minorities right now in a meaningful way. In order to have a true democracy, all of our voices must be widely distributed and truly heard. No inclusion. No merger," stated Washington.

About NCAAOM:

The National Coalition of African American Owned Media (NCAAOM) is working to ensure that African American Owned media companies are given the same opportunities as their non-African American counterparts to own, produce compelling content, access distribution, and flourish in today's integrated media landscape. The organization is focused on creating sustained equality through ownership as a means of rectifying the continued racial imbalance within the competitive media industry.

For further information and/or to book interviews with Stanley E.
Washington, President & CEO of NCAAOM,
please contact Helene Chaleff, Executive Assistant,
Helene@ncaaom.tv, 310.218.0460.

   Media Contact: Alescia Buford, alescia@bufordcommunications.com,
818.995.6545

   Join NCAAOM's Facebook page.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111452938892647&ref=ts
http://twitter.com/NCAAOM

SOURCE National Coalition of African American Owned Media

Photo:http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110115/LA30782LOGO
http://photoarchive.ap.org/
National Coalition of African American Owned Media

CONTACT: Helene Chaleff, Executive Assistant, of National Coalition of African American Owned Media, +1-310-218-0460, Helene@ncaaom.tv; or Alescia Buford, +1-818-995-6545, alescia@bufordcommunications.com, for National Coalition of African American Owned Media

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Holiday tips (important)

>>
>> HOLIDAY EATING TIPS
>>
>>
>>
>> 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
>>
>> 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare... You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!
>>
>> 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
>>
>> 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
>>
>> 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
>>
>> 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
>>
>> 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.
>>
>> 8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
>>
>> 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
>>
>> 10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:
>>
>> "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate and wine in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
>>
>> Have a great holiday season!!

Posted via email from rah's posterous

Top 5 Problems with the Tax Deal

Share this list and help make sure as many people as possible know exactly what the Republicans are getting in the tax deal by acting like hostage takers.

Everyone knows that the "deal" that President Obama agreed to with Republicans will extend George W. Bush's reckless millionaire tax bailout—but what a lot of folks don't realize is that there are lots of other terrible parts of it, too.

Unemployed Americans desperately need their benefits extended to get by in this economy—so Republicans held them hostage to force through a slew of horrible economic policies in this deal. Here are just a few that you might not have heard about.

Problem #1: The deal is a stealth attack on Social Security.

The deal will lower the payroll tax—the tax that funds the Social Security trust. This is a trap for Democrats. Republicans have been coming after Social Security for years and this cut is the biggest threat to the vital program in decades. It will cut one-third of Social Security's funding this year alone and when we need to restore the payroll tax back to its current level, Republicans will cry "tax increases" and could gut it permanently.

Problem #2: For nearly one in three workers, it's a tax increase.

Nearly 50 million working Americans—including all workers making less than $20,000 per year—and millions of federal, state, and municipal workers will see their taxes go up because of the deal.2

Problem #3: The deal has not one but TWO millionaire bailouts.

In addition to extending all the Bush income tax breaks for the top 2%, the deal will slash the estate tax. If Congress did nothing, next year the estate tax would be 55% and apply to everyone inheriting $1 million or more. But the deal reduces it to 35% and only people who inherit more than $5 million will have to pay. This second bailout will give a gigantic tax giveaway to a few thousand of the richest families in the country and add hundreds of billions to the national debt.3

Problem #4: Unemployment help is insufficient and inadequate.

While the deal extends unemployment benefits for another 13 months for people currently receiving it, millions of unemployed workers who've struggled the most and been out of work more than 99 weeks—since the giant Wall Street banks wrecked the economy—will get no help at all under the deal.4 It's a gamble that there will be jobs in the next 13 months when the insurance runs out, but the tax cuts will go well beyond that. Better to just pass a stand-alone unemployment extension to help all struggling Americans.

Problem #5: Tax giveaways to the rich are a terrible way to create jobs.

Tax breaks for the rich are the least efficient way to create jobs and help the economy grow. In fact the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says extending all tax cuts would lower unemployment only 0.1% to 0.3% over the next year5 and that the cost of the tax deal would be $900 billion over the next five years.6

Posted via email from rah's posterous
